You Control the Social Firehose

After following this discussion on Google+ about the evolution of social network adoption and a number of other posts regarding excitement for a chance to cut down on the noise/shares/etc,  I find I must point out something fairly obvious. Filtering social networks is YOUR responsibility. In 2007, FriendFeed was the shiny new tool at the moment.  A lot of folks went to great lengths to add every other social network they were a part of.  Including Twitter.  The redundancy was incredibly annoying.  I decided it wasn’t the best use of my time to read the same content twice (especially breakfast updates!) and promptly stopped listening to FriendFeed. If you find that are feeling overwhelmed with[.....]

How to Sell Your Product in Less than a Minute

I read about SwiftKey after seeing it tweeted as a keyboard alternative for Android users. When I landed on the home page of their website I saw this: I immediately went to search for their app and paid for it.  It took less than a minute to sell me on this product. I haven’t come to any conclusions about how effective it is and I don’t know anything about their customer service, but they got me to spend.  While social matters, that sale is the ultimate goal. (Keeping customers is another blog post. ) How can you make people buy into your product when you have less than a minute? Does your website/landing page/marketing efforts[.....]

How to backup WordPress completely

Backup

If your content matters to you, especially content on your WordPress site, then please take a few moments to back it up.  It’s much like your backup of your hard drive.  You wouldn’t pass on that, don’t pass on this. Work it into your morning routine. You’ll need complete backups in order to restore with confidence.  How do you do this? First, backup your content by exporting it from WordPress.  Like so. It really does take 60 seconds.  If you really don’t have 60 seconds a week to think about this, hire me.   At least do it weekly, if you blog more often, daily. Second, backup the database.  You can do this three ways.[.....]

Want more sales? Make it easy.

When doing business online, one of your first priorities is to make it dead easy to buy.  It is the responsibility of a business to provide a flawless experience online for customers when they get into the sales process.  The goal of every business should be to convert the sale, yes? As an assistant, I spend a lot of my time managing speaking information, travel schedules and flight/hotel bookings for clients.  For example, booking a hotel should be dead easy.  It takes at most 3-5 minutes (unless they need a convoluted amount of information). If a site fails me at that moment I click that button to pay, it marks my day.  I now have[.....]

A small trick to save you time when moving your WordPress blog (and backup advice!)

Sometimes your hosting just doesn’t live up to your needs and/or expectations.  I’ve experienced downtime and the accidental deletion of my database tables myself. Eventually if the host is really bad, you reach the point where enough is enough. Maybe because of GoDaddy’s Super Bowl ads or the Network Solutions deal to switch was too sweet to pass up after the controversy.  Either way, you’re ready to make the move, but reading the WordPress instructions makes you want to hide under the covers.  Here’s some hints that’ll make it easier. (Note: This assumes that you have purchased hosting with the new company you want to move to.) So what’s my trick? Ask your new web[.....]
